PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
Scandium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula ScCl3. It is an off-white solid at room temperature and pressure. It is easily soluble in water and insoluble in anhydrous ethanol. When crystallized from an aqueous solution, it obtains a hexahydrate (partial dehydrochlorination when heated to form insoluble scandium oxychloride).
PROPERTIES
- Appearance: Scandium chloride is a white crystalline solid.
- Solubility: Scandium chloride can be dissolved in water to form a scandium chloride solution.
- Specific gravity: The specific gravity of scandium chloride is about 1.98 g/cm³.
USES
- Industrial applications: Scandium chloride can be used as a synthetic dye, catalyst, and metal surface treatment agent.
- Chemical research: Scandium chloride is often used in the field of chemical research to prepare other scandium compounds.
- Medical applications: Scandium compounds are sometimes also used in nuclear medicine examinations and treatments in medical imaging.
PREPARATION METHOD
- Scandium chloride can be prepared by reacting scandium with chlorine. Reaction equation: 2K + Cl₂ → 2KCl.
SAFETY INFORMATION
- Scandium chloride is a general inorganic salt and has a certain degree of corrosiveness. When handling scandium chloride, appropriate personal protection measures should be taken, such as wearing gloves, goggles and protective clothing.
- Scandium chloride is not significantly toxic, but excessive exposure may cause irritation and burns. Inhalation or ingestion of scandium chloride must be avoided, and direct contact with the skin must be avoided.
- When handling scandium chloride, care should be taken to store it in a dry, well-ventilated place away from sources of fire and combustible materials.
